Deputy Sheriff
Career development begins at the time of appointment. Members of the
Cattaraugus County Sheriff's Office have opportunities for career advancement by taking
Civil Service promotional exams periodically for the supervisory positions of Sergeant and
Lieutenant, and being assigned to special fields or details. Some of the special fields or
details officers may be assigned are as follows:
- Traffic Enforcement
- DWI Enforcement
- Marine Enforcement
- Snowmobile Enforcement
- Underwater Recovery
- Community Relations
- Evidence Technician
- Detective
- Identification
- Juvenile
- Crime Prevention
- Training
- Communications
- Narcotics
- Arson
Special Requirements for Deputy Sheriff
- Must meet physical standards as prescribed by the Municipal Police
Training Council
- Must not have been convicted of a felony
- Must possess a driver's license issued by the New York State Department
of Motor Vehicles
- Must be eligible for a certificate of training issued by the Executive
Director of the Municipal Police Training Council
- Study at a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or
university with successful completion of 30 credit hours with at least 12 credit hours of
study in the field of criminology, criminal justice, police science or related field, or:
- One year, or it's part-time equivalent, of experience in the military
police or as a police officer or criminal investigator.
