Navigation and Snowmobile Unit The Sheriff's Office maintains Marine Units on two bodies of water during the summer boating season using two vessels. The Allegany Reservoir, which is the site of the county-owned Onoville Marina, is a very popular summer recreation area. This lake borders the Allegany State Park, Allegany Indian Reservation, and crosses over the state line into Pennsylvania. A second marine unit is deployed on Lime Lake in the Town of Machias. This small lake is very popular and is extremely busy with all sorts of water related activities. Deputies on Marine Patrol conduct safety inspections, enforce the navigation laws, assist stranded boaters, and investigate boating accidents. They also assist with search activities and rescue operations as needed. The Sheriff's Office recently received a donation from a county resident that allowed the snowmobile patrol to begin patrolling on a regular basis again after being used on an as needed basis only. The Sheriff's Office has one snowmobile with two deputy sheriff's operating it a various times and for special events. The deputies are performing routine patrol of popular snowmobile trails and concentrating on areas where there have been complaints filed regarding violations of various laws and regulations regarding snowmobiles. Deputies assigned to the Snowmobile Unit have attended Cold Water Rescue Training in the Adirondack Mountains and are certified for snowmobile patrol and ice/cold water rescue. |
