Cattaraugus County Sheriff's Advisory Council

The Sheriff's Advisory Council was begun in April of 1998. Its purpose is to promote and encourage communication between the Sheriff's Office and the citizens of Cattaraugus County.

Council Membership

The Sheriff's Advisory Council was designed with the intention of having representatives from all areas of the county, both rural and urban. It is also the intent of the Council to have as broad and diverse a spectrum of citizens as possible.

Present Council membership includes people from Little Valley, Portville, Olean, Salamanca, Randolph, Freedom, South Dayton and Ellicottville.

An additional part of the Council's design is to educate the members, and their communities through them, on the the extensive range of services available to county residents through the Sheriff's Office. It is anticipated that these services will be better utilized by the educational efforts.

Areas of Council Assistance

The Council provides civilian review of proposed and ongoing departmental programs. The Sheriff relies on this as part of the input to "fine tune" or otherwise adjust his efforts in serving the county.

It also serves as a conduit between the department and citizens, bringing community concerns to the Sheriff's attention and helping to work toward solutions.

Council members are encourages to work with their respective community governmental, civic and educational organizations, accepting input and suggestions and and assisting in the organization of neighborhood watch programs. However, they shall speak on Council matters only on the direction of the Council as a whole and the Sheriff.

Members make public presentations regarding the Advisory Council and are assisted by a representative of the Sheriff.

A: From time to time, vacancies occur and will be filled at those times. You may submit a latter of interest to the Sheriff that will be kept on file.
